anecdote /ˈænɪkˌdot/

n. a short, usually funny account of some real person or event 軼事；趣聞；(歷史或名人的)祕史(常用複數)

【推測詞義】不曾給予向外公開的事物(things unpublished)，就是不在正史上的「奇聞軼事」。源於六世紀拜占庭史學家(Byzantine historian) Procopius 曾寫一部巨著Anekdota意思是「未公開的事」但未出版」。

【推測詞義】與(其他人長得)不同，就會被視為「異常的」。

【注意用法】切勿受中文翻譯的影響，而認為anomaly具有負面的屬性，其實它的屬性是中性。

3.2 a- (OE)
 

【來源】a-為古英語的前綴，相當於今日的介詞on, in, at。主要功能是改變原詞彙的詞性，用法如下：

1. 把a- 添加到名詞前會構成後置修飾(不可用於名詞前)的形容詞，表示「正在進行的狀態」，如：ablaze、aghast、alight (發光的；燃燒的)。

2. 把a- 添加在原本是形容詞的單詞上，可構成副詞，如wry (adj.)/ awry (adv.)、loud (adj.)/ aloud (adv.)、broad (adj.)/ abroad (adv.)。

3. 此外，若a- 用作加強語氣的前綴，通常添加在原本是動詞的單詞上(如abide)。
 

abroad /əˈbrɔd/

adv. in or to a foreign country or countries; overseas (在國外；到國外)； out of doors 在戶外，到戶外

【推測詞義】在國外(比在國內寬闊)，在戶外(比在戶內寬闊)。

【常用片語】to go abroad 出國；到戶外

abide /əˈbaɪd/

v. remain or continue in some state 保持或繼續某種狀況; conform to 遵守，服從；put up with；tolerate; endure 忍耐；忍受 [常與can或could用於否定和疑問句]

【推測詞義】古語的意思是「逗留、等候」，一直停留在原地等待，暫不離去，容忍一下吧！

【衍生詞】abiding adj. enduring 持久不變的

【字彙淺析】abide常與介係詞by連用，表示忠實地遵守(法律、契約、諾言等)，例如：abide by law (遵守法律)、abide by one’s promise (遵守諾言)。或是與can, could連用於否定句，來表達無法忍受，例如：Some people can’t abide freedom of speech. (有些人無法忍受言論自由)。而形容詞abiding則通常使用在與思想上有關的事物，例如：an abiding faith (堅定不移的信仰)、abiding friendship (堅定不移的友誼、歷久不渝的友誼)。

【推測詞義】a(古英語中介詞on)+blaze(火焰)，意指「燃燒中」(on fire) 。隱喻為「具有火焰般的特性」如「閃爍的」或「閃亮的」。

abreast /əˈbrɛst/

adv. adj. side by side；on a level 並肩(地)；並排(地)；並行(地)

【推測詞義】胸和胸並排(on a breast level)

【常用片語】to keep abreast of  v. to level with, not to be behind ((知識方面)與…並進；不落後於)

aghast /əˈgæst/

adj. shocked; struck with terror 恐怖的；驚駭的

【推測詞義】處於驚恐的狀態。

【詞源】 源自中古英文agasten (使驚恐)動詞的過去分詞。18世紀當時的字源學家認為gast與ghost (鬼)及ghastly (恐怖的)有詞源關係，於是也依照相同的構詞方式加上了字母h。

aplomb /əˈplɑm/

n. self-possession; self-assurance; poise and self-confidence (面對危機時的)冷靜，沉著；自信，泰然自若

【推測詞義】借自法語aplomb，原意是「依照秤錘(according to the plummet)」。其中的plummet意思

是「繫於繩端的鉛塊」。從古至今，工人砌牆後，丈量牆壁是否垂直時，都是利用鉛做的秤錘(plumb made by lead)來測試，因為鉛是最易取得而重量最重的金屬。因鉛錘的重量不會因風吹草動而隨意

搖擺，所以這個字隱喻著「沉著」之意。

【推測詞義】原本走在正道上突然轉往一旁(turned to one side)，導致歪斜。隱喻為「出錯地」

【常用例句】We had to change our plans because our plans went awry.(我們必須改變計畫因為我們的計畫出岔子了。)

3.4  ab-, abs- (Latin)

【來源】前綴 ab-源自拉丁語介詞ab-，意思是「從(from)」、「偏離(away from)」、「離開(away,off)」。

通常接在動詞及動詞衍生詞之前，有時也接在名詞或形容詞之前。

【變體】ab-接在拉丁詞根(root)之前， ab-本身大部分都是非重讀音節，其所構成的詞彙會有音變的現象。

1. 詞根第一個字母為 c 或 t 時，把聲帶振動的濁音〔b〕放在聲帶不振動的清塞音〔k〕或〔t〕之前，

為了讓發音容易，多插入一個摩擦清音〔s〕，變形為abs-。

ab- → abs- / ___ + c (如 abscond)

ab- → abs- / ___ + t (如 abstract)

2. 詞根第一個字母為唇音 m 或 v，為避免 bm或 bv這兩個唇音在一起難以發音，刪除前唇音b，ab-就變形為a-，但這樣的常用詞不多。

ab- → a / ___ + (如 avert, amazing)

3. ab- → ab- /elsewhere (以上皆非) (如 abstemious)

v. to leave secretly and hide oneself; to flee; to run away and hide,especially to escape the law (為躲避邢責、債務、法律制裁等)潛逃，逃亡

【推測詞義】逃跑並躲藏 (run away and hide)

【推測詞義】在飲食、生活上有節制的人，都會遠離酒精類等強烈的飲料(away from strong drink)。

【注意】在英語詞彙裡，五個母音並存的字共有二個：abstemious、facetious。

【推測詞義】偏離標準的，脫離規範的。現隱喻為「異常的」(away from the rule)

                    norm原指「木匠的丁字尺」，用尺可以知道是不是直的，現借喻為「標準」(standard)
