1            語形表意 (Shape Symbolism)

字母H可追溯至西元前3000年的古埃及象形文字，其意是「以亞麻捻成、編織成的燭芯或編織物(wick of twisted flax)」。腓尼基人的H字母有三條橫槓(three crossbars)，代表「籬笆或柵欄」(fence)。希臘語字母H的形狀與今日字母H非常類似。現今英文字母H的字形是沿用拉丁語的字母H。

1.1  柵欄

1.1.1  阻礙

編織工藝的技巧，不但用在製作繩子或燈芯上，也常用做製作圍欄，人們常用柵欄來阻止圍欄中的動物跑出去，故有「阻礙」之意，例如：hedge (n. 樹籬；籬笆；圍欄)、halt (v. 停止)、handicap (v. 妨礙)。

【推測詞義】圍住會束縛、限制。

＊hinder /ˈhɪndɚ/

v. to hamper；to thwart；to frustrate；to impede；to obstruct 妨礙事情的進行；阻礙；干擾

【推測詞義】扯後腿，干擾事情的進行。若是讓事情完全無法進行，則用prevent。

【衍生詞】hindrance  n. impediment；obstruction；obstacle 妨礙；障礙(物) (其後用介詞to)

【常用句子】You are hindering me in my work by talking all the time. (你講個不停，妨礙了我工作。)

n. a race iin which peope or horses must jump over a series of upright frames (用複數形，但視為單數)跨欄賽跑；a movable barrier；a temporary fence 臨時圍欄；a difficulty to be overcome；obstacle 困難；障礙

v. to jump over a hurdle 跳越(欄架)；to enclose with hurdles 圍以臨時柵欄；to overcome (an obstacle) 克服(障礙、困難等)

【推測詞義】小柳條彎曲編織而成圍欄。 在1833年，詞義轉成「(跨欄賽跑用的)欄架，(跨欄賽馬所用的)跳欄」，到了1924年，詞義隱喻為「障礙，困難」。

hamstring /ˈhæmˌstrɪŋ/

n. tendons at the back of a person’s knee腿後肌肌腱

v. to cripple by cutting the leg tendons 割斷(人、馬等的)腿筋使成跛腿；使殘廢；to make ineffective or powerless；to impair使無能為力；使受挫

【推測詞義】原指在膝蓋後方的肌腱，因為這條肌腱一斷，就會使人殘廢。

1.1.2  居住、住所

依據李平武教授所著的〈英語字母學研究〉一書中指出「用樹籬圍起的空間便成了一個躲避外部世界危險的處所，在英語中house (房子)一詞的詞源就是hide。其原意可能是「把自己藏起來」。因此人住的地方便為home、house、hut、hall、hamlet。上帝居住的地方為heaven，病人居住的地方為hospital，死者居住的地方為Hades，幽靈常去的地方叫haunt，隱士居住的地方為hermitage，臨時避難的地方叫harbor或haven，動物棲息的地方稱為habitat。」

habit /ˈhæbət/

n. a usual way of behaving (個人的)習慣；clothing【古義】服裝

【推測詞義】源於拉丁語動詞habēre，意思是「擁有，持有(have, hold)」，而habit是表重複性動詞的詞基(frequentative verb base)。一個人長期保持固定的儀容、行為、穿著等，就是這個人的「習慣」。譬如阿拉伯王公出國旅遊的行為方式，都是白袍纏身，不改其「習慣」。

【常用句子】A habit, bad or good, has a hold on you. (任何習慣，不分好與壞，都對你有支配力。)

【推測詞義】長期保持下來的習性或行為方式。

habitat /ˈhæbəˌtæt/

n. the natural home or environment of an organism (動物的)棲息地；(植物的)自然生長環境

【推測詞義】長期保持在某一個地方。 habitat是拉丁語動詞habēre表重複性動詞過去分詞的詞基。

【衍生詞】habitation  n. a dwelling place；home 住所；住處；the act of living in a place 居住

【常用句子】The house is unfit for human habitation. (這棟房子不適合人居住。)

harbor /ˈhɑrbɚ/

n. a place of shelter for ships；a port 港口；a place of refuge 避難所

v. to give shelter or refuge to (船)在港口停泊；to shelter or hide 庇護；藏匿(犯人)(≠evict)；to hold especially persistently in the mind；to cherish；to retain 心懷(怨恨、懷疑、恐懼等)；(內心)懷有…情感。

【推測詞義】原指「軍隊暫時的住所(a shelter for the army)」。當動詞用，其意為「為…提供暫時住所」。「船隻停泊港口」類比為「情感懷藏在心」。

harbinger /ˈhɑrbɪndʒɚ/

n. a forerunner, precursor, herald；messenger 通報者；先驅；先鋒；【古義】(為軍隊或王室出行人員安排食宿等的)先遣人員；sign of something to come 預兆；先兆

【推測詞義】替軍隊安排暫時食宿的先遣人員(person sent to prepare lodgings)。原指古代王公貴族出遊時，先行到達目的地準備食宿與娛樂的僕從或傳令官。

hospitable /ˈhɑspɪtəbḷ /

adj. friendly, kind, and solicitous toward guests；sociable 好客的；招待慇勤的；receptive or open to new ideas (對新思想等)樂意接受的；(思想)開通的；pleasant and favorable for living in (氣候、環境)適宜的

【推測詞義】源自拉丁語名詞hospes，意思是「為訪客提供住宿或招待的主人」。這種主客關係顯示出主人喜愛接待客人 。hospital、hospice、hostel、hotel這些字原意都是指留宿香客和其他客人的地方。

【衍生詞】inhospitable  adj. not suitable；unfavorable 冷淡的；不親切的

1.1.3  生存的地方、土地

人生在這塊土地上用柵欄圍起的空間，便成了居住的處所，也是生存的地方。人的生存與土地有密切關係。聖經上記載上帝創造宇宙後，用地上的塵土捏成人，人死後歸於塵土。故詞根hum的意思是「土」，也表示「人」，如human (adj. 人類的)、humid (adj. 潮濕的)[因土中的水氣所致]、humble (adj. 謙虛的(= modest)；(身分等)低賤的[原意為臥伏於地])。

【推測詞義】上帝創造宇宙後，用地上的塵土造人，因此有「人死歸於塵土」之說；其他的字如human (adj. 人的；人類的)、humane(adj. 人道的；有人情的)、humanity(n. 人類；人性)、humanitarian (adj. 人道主義的) 等詞源都與泥土有關。

humility /hjuˈmɪlətɪ/

n. absence of pride or self-assertion；humbleness；modesty；lowliness 謙遜；謙讓；卑下 (≠ pride, haughtiness)

【推測詞義】人彎下腰，碰到地 (close to the ground)，就是把身段放低。上帝用地上的塵土造人，因而人的身分很低賤，行事要謙虛。

humiliate /hjuˈmɪlɪˌet/

v. to lower or hurt the pride or dignity of；to embarrass；to mortify；to abase；to degrade 傷害…的自尊；使(人)蒙羞；使丟臉

【推測詞義】能使他人低低地臥伏於地，不讓他站起來，隱喻為「使(某人)蒙羞；傷害(某人的)自尊」。

【衍生詞】 humiliating  adj. making someone feel very embarrassed and ashamed屈辱的；丟臉的

                   humiliation  n. act of humiliating 屈辱；丟臉

1.2  梯子

1.2.1  高、高度

腓尼基語H字母有三條橫槓，形似可用來攀高或登高的梯子，所以H為首的字母很多都含有高的意思。
例如：high (adj. 高的；具有…的高度)、height (n. 身高；高度)、hoist (v. (用繩索、滑車等)抬高；吊起)、heyday (n. 全盛期)，以及加在名詞或形容詞之前表「高於；在…之上；超越 (over, above, beyond)」的前綴 hyper- 。

heighten /ˋhaɪtṇ /

v. to bring or come to a high or higher position；to raise 加高：提高；升高

【推測詞義】使升高

【常用片語】  a) (to) heighten one’s vigilance (提高警覺)

                       b) (to) heighten the morale of the troops (提高軍隊士氣)

                       c) (to) raise one’s salary (提高待遇)

                       d) (to) lift one’s voice (提高嗓門)
