3 前綴 (Prefix)

3.1 cata (Greek)

【來源】前綴cata-源自希臘語副詞、介係詞 kata-，意思是「向下(down)」，「反對，不利於(against)」，「錯誤地(wrongly)」，「完全地 (completely, downright)」。

【變體】cata-其後若接母音或h為首的詞根，為維持最佳的CV或VC的音節結構，刪除母音a

cata- → cat- / ___ + (如category, cathedral)

cata- → cata- / elsewhere (若不是母音或h而是在其他的語境下，則母音a不刪除)

【例】

【推測詞義】源自希臘語kathedra，字面意思是「讓臀部坐下之物」，即「座椅」，延伸為「主教的座椅」，意旨「(設有主教聖座的)主教座堂，大教堂(該教區的總教堂)」。

3.1.1 向下(down)

＊catastrophic /kætəˈstrɑfɪk/

adj. causing sudden great damage or suffering；disastrous 大災難的；extremely unfortunate or unsuccessful；tragic 悲慘的

【推測詞義】轉來轉去(突然)轉下而翻覆(overturn)。

【衍生詞】catastrophe n. calamity；a great and sudden disaster 突然的大災難 (如洪水、地震、火災等)

3.1.2 反對，不利於(against)

＊categorical /kætəˈgɔrɪkḷ/

adj. absolute；unconditional 絕對的；無條件的；explicit；direct (意見或想法)直截了當的，明確的；of category 分類別的

【推測詞義】在公眾集會上，排斥異說，用詞要「絕對正確，清晰明確」的方式來表達，並且控告人的名字也要依罪行分門別類列出。

【衍生詞】  categorize v. classify 歸類，分類

                    category n. group ；class；subdivision 類別

【常用片語】a categorical statement 明確的陳述   

3.1.3 錯誤地(wrongly)

catachresis /ˌkætəˈkrisəs/

n. use of the wrong word 【修辭】詞語的誤用(如blatant的用法誤為flagrant之意；比喻的誤用或混用(如take arms against a sea of troubles (出自《哈姆雷特》)意謂拿武器與海對抗並不合適))

【推測詞義】(詞語)錯誤地使用的狀況，意為用詞不當，詞語誤用。

【常用片語】a computerized catalogue (電腦化的圖書館目錄)
 

3.1.4 完全地 (completely, downright)

catalog(ue) /ˈkætəˌlɔg/

n. a list of all the things in a library, museum, exhibit, or sale (商品)目錄；卡片目錄

v. to list in an organized way 編目錄，列入目錄

【推測詞義】完全地數出來或說出來的清單，意為目錄清單列表。

【常用片語】a computerized library catalogue (已電腦化的圖書館目錄)

catholic / ˈkæθəlɪk /

n. general or universal；worldwide；all inclusive 普遍的；(興趣)廣泛的；全面的；broad-minded；liberal (心胸)寬大的，寬容的

【推測詞義】具有全面特性的，即無所不包的。

【注意】和新教Protestant相對大寫的Catholic (羅馬天主教的)拼法一樣

3.2 circ / circum (Latin)

【來源】前綴circ- 或circum- 源於拉丁語介系詞circum-，意思是「環繞、周圍(around, about)」。

【變體】circum-所構成的詞彙，其重音不固定(non-neutral)，主要由後綴(suffix)決定。circum-接在拉丁動詞詞根(root)之前，除構成動詞外，還可衍生出名詞或形容詞，但都以詞素為界(morpheme boundary)，也就是不能接完整的詞(word)，例如：circumstances (=condtions) (n 情況，狀況)。

circuitous /sɚˈkjuɪtəs/

adj. roundabout；devious；winding around 繞行的，迂迴的；indirect (說話等)拐彎抹角的，間接的

【推測詞義】走環形(going round and round)而不走直線路徑，就是「迂迴的」。

＊circumscribe /ˈsɝkəmˌskraɪb/

v. to encircle；to mark off 在…周圍畫界線；標出邊界；to limit；to confine or restrict within limits 限制

【推測詞義】繞著周圍畫線(write a line around the bounds)，即畫出界線，「畫」地自「限」。

【衍生詞】circumscription n. limitation or restriction 界限；限制；限定的範圍

＊circumspect /ˈsɝkəmˌspɛkt/

adj. looking around；wary；cautious；watchful；heedful (人、行動) 考慮周詳的；謹慎小心的

【推測詞義】看一看再下決定，隱喻為「謹慎小心的」。

【衍生詞】circumspection n. caution；wariness 考慮周詳

circumvent /ˌsɝkəmˈvɛnt/

v. to surround or circle around 包圍(敵人)；to evade；to get around or avoid, especially by trickery or deception 設法規避 (法律、規則等)；迂迴規避；to outwit 以智取勝

【推測詞義】繞著四周行走，隱喻為「包圍」；繞著圍過來，隱喻為「巧妙避開」。

3.3 con- (Latin)

【來源】con- 源於拉丁語介系詞cum，原意是with，借入英語後，成為最重要的前綴，用法很廣，變化也很多。con- 意思是「合在一起地，全部地 (jointly, together)」、「與…一起(with)」，有時還可作為加強語氣，其義為「非常、十分、完全 (completely, intensively)」。前綴con- 接在詞根 (root) 之前，以詞素為界 (morpheme boundary)，也就是不能皆完整的詞 (word)。

【變體】

1. con- 的因變顯現出語音的多變性。 若其後接上了p、b、m為首的詞根，則變化為com-，此種變化稱為鼻音同化(nasal assimilation)。

con → com / ___ + p (如comprehensive)

con → com / ___ + b (如combust)

con → com / ___ + m (如commensurate)

2. 若其後接上了l、 r為首的詞根，則變化如下，此種變化稱為完全同化(total assimilation)，同化後子音若重疊，發音時所重疊子音，只能唸出一個子音。

con → col / ___ + l (如collaborate)

con → cor / ___ + r (如corroborate)

3. 同化後若其後接上了h、gn或母音為首的詞根，則變化為co-

con → co / ___ + gn (如cognitive)

con → co / ___ + h (如coherent)

con → co / ___ + vowel (如coalesce)

4. con → con / elsewhere (con- 用於其他的子音字母為首的詞根前)

前綴con-所構成的詞彙，無固定重音(non-neutral)，主要由後綴(suffix)決定。

【例】

cumbersome /ˈkʌmbɚsəm/

adj. not easy to handle；heavy；bulky；clumsy；unwieldy 笨重難拿的；累贅的

【推測詞義】(東西)一起攜帶會很笨重、很不方便，阻礙行動(hinder)。

【衍生詞】cumber  v. to hinder；to hamper 妨礙；成為累贅

【常用片語】a cumbersome piece of baggage (一件笨重的行李)

3.3.1 合在一起地，全部地(jointly, together)

v. to begin；to start；to initiate；to originate 開始；著手

【推測詞義】一起進入

【衍生詞】conmmencement  n. the beginning of something；a graduation ceremony 開始；畢業典禮

＊commensurate /kəˈmɛnʃərɪt/

adj. corresponding in size or degree；proportionate 成比例的；相稱的；equal in measure or size；equivalent 等量的；同一大小的

【推測詞義】測量出來的結果二者同一大小(the result of being measured together)。

【常用句子】Your salary will be conmensurate with your education. (薪水視學歷而定)

＊comparable /ˈkɑmpərəbəl/

adj. able to be compared 可比較的；equivalent 比得上的；匹敵的；similar 類似的

【推測詞義】放在一起看看是否相等，若是就可以相比的。

【衍生詞】comparative  adj. relative；approximate 比較的；相較而言的；相當的

【常用片語】 a) comparative literature (比較文學)

                       b) in comparative comfort ((和他人或往日比起來)相當舒適)

＊compatible /kəmˈpætɪbəl/

adj. able to exist together harmoniously 可和諧共存的；well suited；consistent；agreeable 適合的；不矛盾的

【推測詞義】可跟某人一起相互容忍的，或感(pass)同(com)身受的人必能「與人和睦相處的」。

【衍生詞】incompatible adj. incapable of coexisting；discordant；incongruous；inconsistent (無法和諧共存的；(個性、性情、血型等)合不來的；(與某事物)不一致的

＊compensate /ˈkɑmpɛnˌset/

v. to give something in recognition of loss；to repay or reimburse；to offset；to make up for a deficiency 補償；賠償；彌補

【推測詞義】雙方一起權衡輕重後補償(weigh one thing against another)

【衍生詞】compensatory adj. giving something to make up 補償的；賠償的

＊competent /ˈkɑmpɪtənt/

adj. able；capable；adept；proficient 有能力的；能幹的；adequate 充分的；足夠的；fit；suitable；acceptable and satisfactory 適當的，合於條件的，能勝任的

【推測詞義】一起尋求就是競爭，能夠競爭的(人)就是有能力的(人)。

【衍生詞】competence n. ability；capability能力

n. contest 競賽(會)；rivalry 競爭；角逐

【推測詞義】一起共同追求某物的過程
