＊avert　/əˈvɝt/

v. to keep something bad from happening; to prevent; to forestall; to avoid or ward off 防止；躲避；擋開(災難、危險等)； to turn away (one’s eyes / gaze / face / mind) from the unpleasant scene  把(目光、臉、注意力等)從令人不悅的事物轉移

【推測詞義】從(災難、危險等)轉離(turn away)而避開。

【字彙淺析】avert可用在避免風險或災害上，其語意與prevent相同，例如：avert a crisis (避免危機)、avert the risk (規避風險)、avert a disaster (避免災害)。另外還可用在片語avert one’s gaze from或avert one’s eyes from，表示「把眼神移開(某物)、避而不看某物」，He does not avert his eyes from the righteous. (他時常看顧義人) 引自聖經約伯。

avocation　/ˌævəˈkeʃən/

n. minor occupation; sideline 副業，兼差；hobby; recreation; diversion 消遣，娛樂，業餘愛好

【推測詞義】古人所從事的職業(vocation)都是要聽神的召喚，也就是calling (n.神的召喚，職業)。avocation則是暫時離開神所要求的工作，去從事一些副業或業餘的嗜好。

【來源】源自希臘前綴，可以表示「往後(back, backward)、反對(against)」、「往上(up, upward)、根據(upon, according to)」、「再次(again)」。

anachronism  /əˈnækrəˌnɪzəm/

n. an error in chronology or time order 時代錯誤(特指把後世的事物與前代事物相混淆)；年代誤植(尤指過早)；anything out of its proper time frame ; anything chronologically inappropriate 過時的人或事物

【推測詞義】源自希臘語，原意指「落後於時代(back-timing)」。所謂「時代錯誤」是指所敘人或事與時代不合的錯誤，常見於以歷史為背景的古裝劇中。

【來源】源自希臘語介詞，意思是「相反(opposite)、對抗(against)」。現代英語也常常利用這個前綴使用在名詞之前，表示「對抗」、「對立」之意，例如：antipathy(反感)，antibiotic(抗生素)。

【變體】為避免出現兩個連續母音，前綴anti-接在母音或 h為首的詞根之前時，則變體為ant-。否則

一律併作anti-。

3.8  ante-  (Latin)

【來源】源於拉丁語介係詞，意思是「在…之前(before, in front of ) [in time/ place]」。表示時間或空

間的「前或先」。
